D/A Top Music, October 2009

29 Oct

It has been a couple months since I have written a Top Music post, but here is some music that I currently cannot live without right now.

Don’t Stop by Annie

Sublime moment: The catchy (and impossibly odd) The Breakfast Song: “what do you want // what do you want for BREAKFAST?” It reminds me of classic Sugarcubes, a fitting companion to Eat The Menu. I can already envision a thousand classic music video scenarios in my head. Elsewhere, Annie gets all gold stars, just like we knew she would. The question is: should Kylie and Lady GaGa be concerned?

Star Power (Acoustic 09 Version) by Sonic Youth

I don’t know why this song is necessary. The version on EVOL was perfectly capable. But it does make an excellent case that a Sonic Youth Unplugged album might be a hush worth hearing. As further evidence, here is an acoustic version of The Empty Page from Murray Street, courtesy of Aquarium Drunkard.

Fake Gold by Tigercity

Tigercity is a band that I was really excited about. Pretend Not To Love from 2007 was some weird mash-up of New Edition, Pseudo Echo, and all sort of Eighties production clichés that just sounded so damn good. Like kids do, the band has grown up a bit, emerging from boy-band bliss to the confusions of adulthood. Thanks for holding on to that youthful falsetto, it’s what keeps Tigercity running.

Before The Frost… Until the Freeze by The Black Crowes

It will take all year for me to properly sort through this 20 song monster but I will relish the opportunity. This is the Black Crowes record that has always been there- they just finally took the time down to run through the songs while the tape was actually rolling. Background: The Black Crowes throw a party, invite some friends, and play two knock-out live sets for them. I generally despise live albums- but I love this. Absent is bombastic pointlessness and we are gifted an album that is impossibly loose and breezy. Thank you, B.C.

White As Snow by U2

After incredible anticipation, I totally dismissed No Line on the Horizon after just a few spins. I rediscovered White As Snow while making a winter mixtape. This song just demonstrates that U2 sound the best when they break their stadium-sized rules and do what they are not supposed to be doing.

Daytrotter Session, 22/10/2009 by Martha Wainwright

The Wainwrights- a brand you can trust.
