A Yuletide Tribute to the Goober & The Peas Christmas Album
12 Dec
89X in Detroit ran a radio promotion in 1992 to put this 3 song benefit single out for the holiday season. Only 1,000 copies or so were pressed so there is a privileged few that have heard A Christmas Eve Get-Together With Goober & The Peas. I covet the copy that now rests in the closet at my parents’ house. Pulling out these songs each year is as special as white elephant gift exchanges and as Christmas as showing up at Grandma’s on Christmas Eve at four o’clock. These songs are an annual tradition for me and I look forward to them each December.
By no means are these polished Christmas songs, unless you have a punk rock family tree. Goober & The Peas run through a sloppy version of Snoopy’s Christmas that leave all of the rough notes in. We have never emptied the liquor cabinet at my Grandma’s but, if we did, I imagine that this is what it would sound like.

The CD rounds out with two cow-punk originals, one lamenting the downfall of the Christmas season (presumably as a reaction against retail orgies). The other song is a sexy ode to a past love, reminiscing about aprons being hastily flung aside for sex on the kitchen floor, presumably between tending to the turkey and the green bean casserole while the Christmas lights burn brightly from the next room.
Not your typical set of Christmas songs. As for Goober & The Peas, they released another album, broke up, and, years later some members reemerged as Blanche.
Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas to Goober, The Peas, and their fan site.
