Airborne On New Year’s Eve (Post-Flight Analysis)
1 Jan
I am now at the Amsterdam airport listening to a Dutch language version of I Just Called To Say I Love You. Being airborne at midnight was a dud. The flight crew barely had the gall to alert the cabin of the passing of the hour (they were five minutes late). My neighbour (a lovely girl from Bristol) and myself whisper-yelled Happy New Year! and we were the only two to do so in the cabin.
The flight was smooth and a free glass of red wine was perched on my tray next to my David Sedaris book. Since my dinner was what they referred to as special needs, I received my vegetarian Mattar Paneer before any of the rest of the cabin could say chicken or pasta. My tray was clear other than my book and wine by the time midnight rolled along.
I am glad that I kept my promise, even if the rest of the cabin was subdued and engrossed with in-flight movies. I was disappointed but, then again, celebrating with strangers can be overrated. At least that lovely girl from Bristol and I had a moment to giggle and be merry and sometimes that is the most fulfilling offering that New Year’s Eve can provide.
